Exciting News: Our Move to Prague is Approved!

We’re thrilled to share some wonderful news with you: we’ve been approved to move to Prague in August! Thanks to the incredible support from our dedicated ministry partners, including many of you, and several new supporters, the Lord has provided significantly towards our monthly pledges and relocation costs in record time.

Current Financial Standing

While we’re still about $1,500 short of our monthly pledges goal, MTW has given us the green light to proceed. To help make this happen, we’ll be taking a voluntary salary reduction to meet the administrative requirements. This temporary measure allows us to move forward while we continue to trust in God's provision to meet our full financial goal. This also means that Caleb and Mary can start school in Prague at the end of August while we continue to trust the Lord to raise the last bit of financial support needed for the long-term viability of our ministry in Prague.

How You Can Help

Please pray with us for the Lord to bring in the remaining monthly, quarterly, and annual pledges. The frequency of the pledge is less important than the commitment to ongoing support. Whether you can give monthly, quarterly, or annually, every contribution helps take the Gospel to the lost in Prague and helps us trust the Lord together to strengthen and continue Faith Community Church's growth in grace.

Special Needs

In addition to ongoing support, we need approximately $14,000 in additional special gifts to cover one-time expenses such as moving costs, real estate and school deposits, visas, and more. Since the U.K. is no longer part of the European Union, we also require a special veterinary exam and an EU “pet passport” for our dog Aldo. Fortunately, driving to Prague with Aldo will be more cost-effective than flying.

Join Us in Prayer

We’re incredibly grateful for your continued prayers and support as we embark on this new chapter in the Czech Republic. Together, we’re bringing the Gospel to the heart of Europe. Please pray for the Lord to provide the remaining financial support and for a smooth transition for our family.

Stay Updated

To stay updated on our journey and ministry, please continue to follow our blog. We’ll be sharing more updates and stories about our work and experiences in Prague. Your prayers and support mean the world to us as we take this step of faith.

Thank you all for your love, support, and prayers. Let’s continue to trust together in God's provision and grace through our partnership in the Gospel.

Blessings from London,

Dawson, Shanna, Joshua, Caleb, and Mary Elisabeth Bean

Where in the World are the Beans Going Next?: Opportunity #2 - “Central Asia”

May be an image of 2 people and monumentMay be an image of 12 people and La Sagrada Familia

Apologies for our delay in posting this next installment of "Where In the World are the Beans Going Next?", as we have been away for the past week on our third and final vision trip to consider the needs and opportunities in Prague, Czech Republic. We visited the team and IPC church in Prague, and preached for them on Galatians 3:26-4:7, but before our trip to Prague, we had the privilege to visit our organisation’s team in “Central Asia” from late March through early April. It was absolutely amazing! However, we can’t say the city and country name online for security reason as it is a Muslim majority country.

May be an image of text that says "Number of People Groups People Groups Unreached 41 Progress Level 26 (63.4%) Total Population Population in Unreached 10,330,000 Largest Religion Islam (85.9%) 9,972,000 (96.5%) % Christian Adherent % Evangelical 2.53% 0.22% Evangelical Annua Growth Rate 3.7%"May be an image of 1 person, monument and skyscraper

This city is the capital and by far largest city of its country with a population of over 2.5 million, and is an absolute study in contrasts. It is both European and Asian, Muslim and secular, ancient and modern, rich and poor, and absolutely in need of Jesus. The people who we encountered were so incredibly friendly and kind, the food was amazing, and the city was very impressive with a widely eclectic mix of both and ancient and modern architecture, Central Asia has at different periods in history been part of the Greek Macedonian Empire, Roman Empire, Persian Empire, Mongol Empire, Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire, and finally the Soviet Union before becoming an independent nation after the fall of the USSR in 1991.

Since it stands at a strategic crossroads between Russia, Europe, the Middle East, and eastern Asia, between the Black and Caspian Seas, as well as along the “Silk Road” (an ancient and highly prized overland trade route connecting Europe and Asia), this region and its cultures have seen various powers fight over it for centuries. As part of the Persian Empire prior to Persia’s (Iran’s) forced Islamisation in the 7th Century AD, this country was a multicultural region where religious freedom was valued, and Zoroastrians (the religion of ancient Persia prior to Islam), Christians, Jews, Buddhists, and Hindus lived together in relative harmony until it was conquered by Islamic Arabs who forced them to submit to Islam, which the Ottomans (Turks) later reinforced. They were later conquered by the pre-Soviet Russian Empire and then became part of the Soviet Union after the Bolshevik Revolution, following World War I.

Needless to say, Central Asians have seen a lot of war and a lot of different beliefs forced upon them over the centuries, and the cultural impacts of all of these past cultural and religious influences have continued to shape and have influence on their spirituality (and often their lack thereof), art, architecture, language, and cuisine, however, this country and its surrounding region have been relatively peaceful for nearly 100 years with some small exceptions in history. Luxury goods such as silk Persian rugs and caviar are relatively cheap here compared to the Western world, as this is where they come from. In the 1800’s (like Norway in the 1960’s) oil was discovered, one of the earliest discoveries of petroleum in the world where it was literally seeping from the ground. Natural gas bubbled up from the ground creating naturally occuring geographic “fire features” giving this land their nickname as the “The Land of Fire”. The oil industry was, quite literally, born here.

Today between 97-99% of this country’s residents are “culturally Muslim”, and while the vast majority are not particularly devout Muslims or religious, and their government is officially “secular” (a legacy from their time in the Soviet Union), the majority people group and 25 other people groups within their borders are considered “Unreached People Groups” with little to no access to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and very little indigenous Gospel witness within their cultures. The majority of Central Asians are Muslim, simply because they don’t know of anything else and have probably never met a Christian or seen a Bible. While statistically and culturally muslim, the vast majority are quietly atheist/agnostic, do not see Islam as being particularly relevant to their daily lives, and only interact with Islam during Muslim holidays. If nominal Christians can be called "Christmas & Easter Christians", then most Central Asians might be considred "Eid Al-Fitr & Eid Al-Adha Muslims". As an officially “secular” government, they allow for certain things that are not commonly available in much of the Islamic world (such as alcohol). As a result they have become known as a fun place to vacation and as the “Las Vegas of the Muslim World”.

May be an image of 2 people, slow loris and ferretMay be an image of 6 peopleMay be an image of monument

The majority of people of Central Asia are tremendously open minded, welcoming, and curious about what visitors believe, particularly westerners. When they meet a westerner who is not there as part of the oil industry, they want to know why in the world you are there. Telling them that you think that they have a beautiful culture and that you think that it might be an interesting place to live will often earn you smiles and very special kindness from them. They want to know who you are, why you are there, what you believe, and why in the world you might want to live there if you’re not there to make money off of their natural resources. They are accustomed to feeling used by other cultures and even their own government have become rich off of them without them having much to show for it themselves. In spite of their relatively high quality of life and the beauty of their surroundings, Central Asians tend to be self-effacing about their own culture, and desire to be seen as more western/European than Middle Eastern/Muslim.

While there has not been an “indigenous” christianity in this particular country of Central Asia for over a thousand years since becoming Islamic, there are small numbers of Eastern Orthodox Christians who are mostly ethnically Russian, Armenian, or Georgian migrants. Most remaining signs of Christianity here were destroyed during their time as part of the Soviet Union, including most church buildings. One exception is a large historic Lutheran church building dating to the late 19th Century, which was not demolished because the communists found the height of its ceilings useful for constructing tall statues of communist and Soviet figures such Vladimir Lenin and Josef Stalin. This usefulness providentially preserved the building for future use, and now a handful of different Christian churches use it as a meeting space for worship, including an IPC congregation that was planted in their capital city about 18 years ago. Today, the IPC church is led by a pair of bi-vocational indigenous pastors, and an American missionary pastor who has worked here with our organisation for the past 15+ years, who now leads a small mission team that is being rebuilt after the Covid-19 pandemic sent many western missionaries back to their home countries.

Thanksgiving in London

Happy belated Thanksgiving everyone! We've had a busy few days of life and ministry between Home Group, a trip to York for Presbytery on Friday and Saturday, and a very full day at church yesterday, so sorry we're just now getting around to posting this. On Thursday evening our Home Group Bible Study celebrated a very international take on an American Thanksgiving Dinner with guests and dishes from around the world.

May be an image of 18 people

Even though Thanksgiving is celebrated in several countries other than just the U.S., including Canada and Brazil, the United Kingdom is not among them. In fact, many British people and many other nationalities often don't know much about Thanksgiving or why we celebrate it. So because of Thanksgiving's origins and orientation toward thanking God for the blessings in our lives, it’s a really great opportunity to talk about Jesus. Before dinner Dawson gave a very brief explanation of the origins of Thanksgiving and a short devotional from Psalm 100 before praying for our meal.

May be an image of 2 people and indoors

This Thanksgiving will be especially memorable for our family as we gathered together with our regular Home Group members as well as a few non-Christian friends who we’ve been getting to know and reaching out to from our Free English Classes outreach. Please continue to pray for our Home Group Bible Study and for our outreach to international friends through Free English Classes.

May be an image of 5 people

Please pray especially for non-Christian friends Parham (Iran), Adil (Pakistan), Benson (Hong Kong), Dmitri (Russia), and Francesco (Italy) as Dawson meets with them weekly to read and discuss the Gospel of Mark one to one. Please pray also for growing Christian friends who we are meeting with regularly as well for one to one discipleship, including Eduardo (Spain), Zuri (Brazil), Justin and Zuko (both from South Africa), Fenno (Kenya), Amirreza (Iran), Yuki (Japan), Prateek and David (both from India), Dawid (Poland), as well as many others, and that the Lord would continue to open doors for new opportunities for evangelism and discipleship through Free English Classes, church, Home Group, and the Ealing community.

Coming to America

Hello Lubbock area friends! We’ll be in Lubbock for a short window this weekend, and would dearly love to see any of you who may be available. We’ll be at one of our beloved partnering churches, First Christian Church (2323 Broadway), sharing an update at both the 9am and 11am services, followed by a reception and sharing time after church from about 12:30pm for any who’d like to drop in to say hello and get some Bean hugs!

Unfortunately our time this trip is short, and while we wish that we could get to see ALL of our ministry partners and partnering churches, MTW has encouraged us to be on “vacation” this trip rather than “home assignment”, so this will have to be our “little secret”. Regardless, we hope we may be able to maximise our time by seeing as many as may be available at church or the reception after. We would absolutely love to see you there!

Happy Easter From London!

Happy Easter everyone, Christ the Lord is risen today! This year our oldest son Joshua decided to start an Easter Egg Hunt for the children at IPC-Ealing. It was completely his idea and he approached our pastor, Paul Levy, to get his blessing, purchased all of the eggs and candy, and got the word out to the church. It was fairly low key, but everyone had a lot of fun with this new tradition at IPC-Ealing.

Caleb Sighting in the Wild

Shanna and I had dentist appointments yesterday in Fulham near the boys’ school, The Fulham Boys School, and had a rare sighting in the wilds of London at the Fulham Broadway tube station of the elusive “Urban Chic Schoolboy Caleb” species in his natural environment and full plumage on his way home from school. This rare species has a natural affinity for coffee, voracious reading, listening to music and audiobooks with his AirPods on the tube, and an aversion to having his picture taken by and/or with his tragically un-hip parents (“dad….😒”). We hope you’ll enjoy this rare sighting in the wild with us!

One Year in London!

It's hard to believe that we arrived in London one year ago this week! We celebrated God's faithfulness and the anniversary of our arival here this evening together as a family at a favourite restaurant in Shepherd's Bush. We're so thankful to call London home for this past year and look forward to many more years of God's faithfulness in this place that he's called us to serve in.

Thank you for your prayers and partnership which the Lord has used to sustain and encourage us every step of the way!

04 January 2023

Please pray for our children as Mary Elisabeth (13) and Caleb (15) have their first day back to school today from the holiday break and Joshua (17) started back and had his first two mock A-Levels exams yesterday and another today. Mary Elisabeth is continuing on at The Green School for Girls, Joshua is continuing “Sixth Form” at The Fulham Boys School, and from today Caleb has transferred to join him at Fulham Boys after being on the waiting list for nearly a year.

Caleb is excited for the new school but it comes with a longer commute on the tube, and Mary Elisabeth will be on her own on the bus for her commute for the first time. This time of year here in England it’s still dark out when they leave for school as well as when they get home, so we’ll have wait to get an updated pic with Caleb’s new uniform! Your prayers are so appreciated!

2023 Year End Update

As we approach the end of 2022 and close out our first year in London, we wanted to post our year-end letter here for any who may not have received it already through post or email to give you a review of how the Lord has been at work over the past 12 months, and what our hopes, prayers, and needs are going into 2023. Thank you so much for all of your prayers and partnership this year, and wishing you all the best to you and yours in 2023!

A Year Ago, We Were Still In Texas!

This time last year we were still in Texas, anxiously waiting for our U.K. Visas to be approved! But as we reflect back on 2022, we're amazed by Lord's goodness and the incredible things he has done since our arrival in London in January. From street evangelism to Bible studies, discipleship, and Holiday Bible Club to theological development, we've been so encouraged to see how the Lord has been at work. Tonight we launched our new Free English Classes, Ealing outreach at our church, IPC-Ealing, in hopes of reaching the 40% of Ealing residents who were born outside the U.K. with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray with us for this new and exciting outreach opportunity for us and for our church!

With today being "Giving Tuesday", would you pray and trust the Lord with us as well to raise an additional $23,000 to help our family and ministry to the Unreached in London start out 2023 on solid footing after what has been a rather unpredictable year in the U.K. financially with significant cost of living increases, inflation, rising energy prices, and a wildly fluctuating exchange rate? If you feel that the Lord may be leading you to give a special year-end gift to the Great Commission through our ministry in London, we would be so honoured, and you may give your gift online at www.mtw.org/bean. We so appreciate your prayers and partnership in taking the Gospel of Grace to the Unreached, in London and beyond.

Happy Thanksgiving American friends! In honour of all of our friends back home in the States I thought I'd post this classic Thanksgiving throwback pic from our days with RUF in Martin, TN in 2013 when our babies were little and my beautiful bride made her very first Thanksgiving Dinner all on her own without the help of parents and in-laws, grandparents, aunts, or cousins!

May be an image of 4 people, people standing, food and indoor

While we've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the different holidays here that are part of British culture that we don't have in the U.S., Thanksgiving is absolutely one of our favourite holidays back home in the States, maybe even more so than Christmas! But here in the U.K., today is just....Thursday. Our kids are in school all day today and no one here (except fellow American expats) gives a thought about stopping everything to gather with family and friends and consume massive amounts of roast turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and all the rest (that's just a Sunday roast dinner here). And just forget about pecan and pumpkin pies, and American Football!

So, American friends, we are counting on YOU to flood our newsfeeds today with pics and videos of family gatherings, full plates, football, parades, autumn decor, deer hunting, and all the rest that Thanksgiving entails for you and yours! We will celebrate as a family on Friday when our kids have a day off from school, and we have an incredible "American Thanksgiving" Feast planned with our church House Group Bible study after worship on Sunday afternoon. So have a big slice of pumpkin pie in honour of the Beans in London, and don't go easy on the whipped cream!!!

A Visit to Mary Elisabeth's School

After not being able to see much when we initially moved to London in January due to the Covid restrictions at that time, we were recently able to tour Mary Elisabeth's school and meet some of the girls that she is friends with and sees every day. Mary Elisabeth attends The Green School for Girls, where she is in Year 9 (the equivalent of 8th Grade in the U.S.).

May be an image of 4 people, people standing and indoorMay be an image of 1 person, standing and outdoors

Since its founding 225+ years ago, The Green School has been affiliated with The Church of England, and is a tuition-free school sponsored by the state church. So, while there are crosses and bible verses posted prominently throughout the school, you'll also find ideas and attitudes throughout the school that just don't quite make sense with Biblical Christianity, to put it bluntly. But, such is life in the U.K. While there are many wonderfully Biblically faithful Church of England churches and schools throughout the U.K., they are sadly far outnumbered by Church of England institutions that quite frankly wouldn't recognise the Christian Gospel and would actually be quite opposed to it.

Mary Elisabeth has been a real trooper over the past year, braving the bus with her brother Caleb each day for their commute, and we're not talking about an American style "yellow dog" school bus, but a real deal red "Double Decker" London commuter bus, which is how High School aged children commute to school here. Funny enough, when we enrolled Mary Elisabeth at The Green School for Girls, we had to sign an agreement along with other parents that we would not drive them to school each day to help reduce traffic congestion and to "lessen the environmental impact"!

No photo description available. No photo description available.

Please pray for Mary Elisabeth and her brothers Joshua and Caleb, that they would study hard, that they would hold fast to the truths of the Gospel, and be "salt and light" in a rather confusing system that often denies those very truths while claiming to uphold them.
